LWV Files Lawsuit Against Cupertino Anti-Nonprofit Speech Ordinance
7/19/2022 - Today, the League of Women Voters of Cupertino-Sunnyvale filed a federal lawsuit challenging the city’s anti-nonprofit speech ordinance, which requires nonprofit organizations to register as lobbyists or risk being penalized. The League asserts that the ordinance’s definition of “lobbyist” is too vague and chills voter engagement by harming voter service organizations.
Senate Fails to Pass Women’s Health and Protection Act
5/11/2022 - After the failure of the Senate vote on the Women’s Health and Protection Act, League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Ann Turner and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued this statement.
League of Women Voters Reacts to 2020 US Census Bureau Report Undercount of Black, Latino, & Indigenous People
3/10/2022 - LWVUS reacted to the US Census Bureau report undercounting 18.8 million and underrepresentation of Black, Latino, and Indigenous people in the 2020 Census.
On January 15, 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT – crossing the three-fourths threshold of support required from the states.
Now we need Congress to remove the deadline so the ERA can become a permanent part of the U.S. Constitution. The ERA passed Congress in 1972, with a 1977 ratification deadline, later extended to 1982. On Jan, 7, 2020, the LWV of the United States sent a letter to the United States Congress urging them to remove the ratification deadline on the ERA.

Housing VICTORY!
Thank you to Gov. Gavin Newsom for signing SB 8, 9, and 10 – much-needed bills to alleviate the housing crisis.
+SB 8 extends the Housing Crisis Act of 2019 to continue to streamline the development of homes in California by prohibiting local actions that reduce housing capacity.
+SB 9 allows qualifying homeowners to split their property into two lots and build two homes on each lot.
+SB 10 allows communities to ease some of the barriers to building small multifamily developments.
