Americans agree, federal policing laws in our country must be changed. For far too long, Black people and communities have been subjected to unimaginable abuse at the hands of law enforcement.

On January 15, 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT – crossing the three-fourths threshold of support required from the states.
Now we need Congress to remove the deadline so the ERA can become a permanent part of the U.S. Constitution. The ERA passed Congress in 1972,
with a 1977 ratification deadline. It was later extended to 1982. On Jan, 7, 2020, the LWV of the United States sent a letter to the United States Congress urging them to remove the ratification deadline on the ERA.

Brief paraphrased summary: California ended 2019 and began 2020 with great optimism and a robust economy, but by mid-March, COVID-19 had it. LWVC shifted focus as we faced the virus’ threats to democracy and the immediacy of racial justice needs.
